School grants support efforts to address school-related issues, such as bullying; enhance student’s educational experience through activities such as electronic field trips; and support school academic organizations.

Community grants support endeavors, such as assistance with computer purchases for low-income parents; and health-related causes as in our donation to the American Cancer Society. With just one exception, all organizations are located in our northern Virginia service area. We award an annual grant to the National Cancer Society headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Grants are funded by contributions from individuals and organizations to the Apple FCU Education Foundation.

Here’s a sampling of some of the schools and communities the foundation supports:

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation:

To provide electronic field trips to the historic site for students at 17 elementary schools in Virginia. The “trips” allow students to experience the historic site through a variety of television broadcasts, the internet and colorful teacher materials.

Fairfax Futures

To benefit early education programs for youngsters designed to effectively prepare them for kindergarten.

Frederick County Public Schools:

To support Apple Federal Credit Union’s Technology in the Classroom Grant Program to bolster Frederick County resources for innovative approaches to problems facing teachers, classrooms and schools.

Future Business Leaders of America

To help establish a new Business Financial Plan program and sponsor student awards in contests designed to strengthen business leadership, reach occupational goals and encourage improvement in home, business and community.

Special Olympics Virginia:

To sponsor the Special Olympics’ 2007 Sports and Entertainment Trivia Challenge Event to benefit the state program. It’s all part of a national effort to create opportunities for persons with intellectual disabilities to showcase their courage, determination and skill.

Stafford County Public Schools:

To support an innovative anti-bullying Connect with Kids Program. The anti-violence initiative, which utilizes television and the web, also fosters self-image, character development, nutrition and wellness and other facets of student life.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology

To support the 2007 Ethics Forum. The forum, “Self Expression and Social Responsibility,” explored areas ranging from human rights in the global community to good sportsmanship – on and off the field.

Virginia Staff Development Council:

To support its annual conference. The meeting stressed development of the capacity of school staffs to meet the needs of all students through professional learning communities.
