Croson is a graduate of George Mason University and has taught in Frederick County Public Schools since 1996. He is currently the health and physical education teacher at Evendale Elementary School.
Croson says he first decided to become an educator when he was in elementary school waiting in line to go to a PE class. He says, “My friends and I were talking about what we wanted to be when we grew up. While we were talking to each other, I could hear laughing and screaming filtering through the doors of the gym. I had no idea what was going on inside, but I knew that I wanted to be a part of it. In that second of anticipation and excitement, I knew I was going to teach physical education.”
Croson believes there are three keys to students becoming successful- the student, teachers and school administrators, and parents. He says, “If the student, teachers and administrators, and the child’s parents or guardians communicate and work together, the result is social and academic success. My philosophy is to give my students the knowledge they need to make educated decisions when making choices pertaining to their life as they grow and develop.” He adds, “I did not get into teaching for the money, but rather for my ability to make a difference in the life of a child through teaching.”
The Teacher of the Year Award winner receives a plaque, a gold signet ring featuring the school division’s logo encircled by the words “Teacher of the Year,” a notebook computer, and $3,000 to cover the cost of instructional materials, supplies, or travel. In addition, the winner's name is placed on a permanent plaque in the board room at the Frederick County Public Schools Administration Building.
The Apple Federal Credit Union Education Foundation provided $3,000 to Frederick County Public Schools through the Frederick County Educational Foundation and earmarked the funding for the Teacher of the Year Award. The ring given to the teacher of the year is provided by Gregg Miller, the local representative of the Herff Jones Company. The notebook computer awarded to the teacher of the year is donated by NCS Technologies, Inc.
