Number of Students: 78100

Number of Teachers in Division: 6187

Name of Teacher Induction Program: Teaching in Loudoun County (TLC)

Program Overview:

Focus: an induction, mentoring, and coaching program in which 100 percent of all novice teachers participate.

A two-day institute launches the induction of new teachers prior to start of school year. Two seminars are held during the school year - one in early December and one in April. Stakeholders involved in the planning and implementation of the first year initiative include the LCPS Mentoring and Coaching Specialist and Supervisor, Instructional Coaches, principals, teacher leaders, administrators from the Department of Human Resources and Talent Development, and representatives from Apple Education Foundation.

Current Mentor Program - Teacher mentors go through an online application process and are screened by building administrators and instructional supervisors. New mentors participate in a training program. Refresher workshops are offered to mentors who are returning to the program after an absence of two or more years. A lead mentor in each school coordinates activities with mentors and mentees and serves as a liaison between the school administration and the Mentoring and Coaching Office.

Instructional coaches work with novice teachers and teachers not meeting LCPS expectations. Coaches provide non-evaluative support to help teachers meet established expectations and goals.

Evaluation of the program includes: session evaluations, interviews, and online surveys.
